Internet of Things, or IoT, is a collective term for all technologies that enable a global infrastructure of physical or virtual objects.
Utilizing the internet of things, users are able to interact with devices and individuals all over the world. It is fair to say, that IoT can be regarded as a revolution in communication. An estimated 25 billion devices will be connected to the IoT worldwide by 21. 63 percent of these devices are consumer electronics. And per second, 127 new devices are connected to the IoT.
But the internet of things is not only found in consumer or communication applications. Connecting large machines together via the internet offers great flexibility and increased efficiency. But not just larger operations can benefit from the IoT. Regular household appliances that are equipped with sensors, are able to monitor room climate, and send their information to the house’s vending system. These systems are often collected under the term Home Automation. This market is expected to grow to $53.45 billion globally by 2020.
The application fields for IoT devices are nearly endless. Almost any newly developed electronic application is connected to the Internet. Because possibilities are so vast, companies have begun to form industry associations, such as the IoTC, for example.
To enable a product or technical device to communicate via the internet, numerous electronic components are needed. First of all, there needs to be a microcontroller to process the incoming data. This data could be picked up by a sensor. The processed data then will be transferred, for example by a wireless module. For stationary objects, an electromechanic ethernet port might be a better solution, since data transfer rates are higher, than wireless solutions.
